It is with profound sadness that the family of Douglas S. Smith, BG (Ret) US Army, announces his peaceful passing on April 8, 2022, at the age of 93, surrounded by family.
Doug is predeceased by his parents, Sydney and Dora; a son, Michael; and his sister, Joyce.
He is survived by his wife Karen, his children Martha (Gary), Tom (Jill), Sue (Bucky), Brian (Tracey), and Steve (Cynthia). He leaves eleven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.
Doug spent thirty-seven years in the United States Army, rising to the rank of Brigadier General. In 1969, he was the battalion commander of the 2nd Battalion, 47th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam. He retired from the Army in 1984 and worked as a consultant in the Washington, D.C. area prior to retiring to Niceville, Florida in 1993. He married Karen in 1995 and they made their home in Bluewater Bay. He was active in the Niceville community, St. Jude Episcopal Church, the Rotary Club, S.O.S., the VFW, and the Mobile Riverine Force Association. He was a Distinguished Member of the 47th Infantry Regiment Association and enjoyed longtime bonds of brotherhood with his veteran and active-duty military brothers.
A memorial service will be held at St. Jude Episcopal Church, 200 Partin Drive North, in Niceville, Florida on Tuesday, April 19, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. Interment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Rotary Foundation or the Gary Sinise Foundation.
