Jon Hickernell Windes, son of Charles Kellogg Windes and Ann Hickernell Windes, died Thursday, November 22, as the result of an automobile accident. Jon resided here for all of his sixty-seven years, except for those in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. He was a charter boat captain in Destin for many years. Jon was a man of God in many ways. He was an active churchgoer and Bible study group participant. He loved his church family, family and countless kitties and dogs over the years. He had a kind heart and a quick wit. He loved words. Although he was beset by illnesses in his life, he soldiered on. During his three-week hospital stay he was asked by a physical therapist how he was feeling. “Beleaguered,” he said. She had never heard the word and asked its meaning. Thinking for a few moments, he answered, “Under the weather.” Well, Jon, you are beleaguered no longer. Enjoy your heavenly rest. Jon was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Ann (she said he had the highest IQ of her five children—some of them dispute that). He is survived by sisters Judy Harrelson of Columbus, GA, Holly Marcell of Destin and brothers David Windes and Kelly Windes of Destin and their families. He was “Uncle Jon” to many nieces and nephews. He also leaves his kitties, Jacob and Joseph. A private family service will be held at a later date. Those wishing to make a donation in Jon’s name may do so to Alaqua Animal Refuge or a charity of their choice
