Tribute

Lorraine A (Veitch) Harvey, 94, of Niceville, Fla, passed peacefully from this life Wednesday afternoon, Sep 1, 2021.  “Sweet Lorraine” to Marion, her husband of 63 years, dear Mother / Mom to her children, grandmama to her grandson, and Lolly / Aunt Lolly to her siblings and nieces and nephews, Lorraine is survived by son William (Jerry) and her sweet and faithful companion dog Sammie of the home in Niceville; Margaret and husband Mark Kilburn of Albuquerque, New Mexico; daughter-in-law Santhi and grandson William Harvey of Beavercreek, Ohio; her sister Jean (Veitch) Kumbusky of Enon, Ohio; in-laws Jim and Norma Harvey of Las Cruces, New Mexico, Blanca Strange and Dr. Robert McComas of Mesilla, New Mexico, and Joan Harvey of Hesperia, California; with dear nieces, nephews, and cousins across the country.

Born Mar 30, 1927, in Mesilla to Raymond James and Erminda J (Fountain) Veitch, Lorraine’s childhood in the Mesilla Valley of southern New Mexico included singing with her siblings as core members of the San Albino Catholic Church choir; the family further shared their talents entertaining with song and dance at fiestas and celebrations across New Mexico.  Upon marriage to Marion Harvey in 1948, Lorraine continued to raise her voice in song in church choirs as her new and growing family moved from duty station to duty station during Marion’s career of service in the US Air Force.  With moves from Waco, Texas to Ann Arbor, Michigan; Albuquerque, New Mexico to Church St in New York City; Hanscom Field in Massachusetts to Tucson, Arizona; Fairborn, Ohio to Naha AFB on Okinawa; and finally to Eglin AFB in northwest Florida, Lorraine masterfully created home for family while expanding a circle of friends from across the country.  In each of their duty assignments, Lorraine quickly became known as the go-to host for her authentic enchilada and chile relleno dinners; and, she was often involved in volunteer roles including organizing CCD classes for the various church communities.  Lorraine and Marion continued to make their home in Niceville in these 40 plus years since Marion’s retirement from the Air Force.

Lorraine was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, William (Bill) Marion Harvey Jr (Feb 2012), son Robert (Nov 2019), her parents, and seven of the nine Veitch siblings.  Lorraine’s passing is marked by sadness for our loss and with profound gratitude for her presence in our lives over so many years.  We are most grateful as well that son Jerry’s presence in the household made it possible for both Marion and Lorraine to remain in their home through their life’s end.  We extend special thanks to both Home Instead and Covenant Care Hospice for their in-home care and support of both Lorraine and her family.
